Ask yourself the question: Am I good enough?
You may think so, you may not? But what is good? Is it being better than the person before you? Is it being better than the people in your circle or those you grew up with? Maybe better than those who you went to school or work with? Whatever. But are you good enough? Probably so.
Now that we've answered that question, here's another one...... Do you want to be great?
Posed this question to myself a few days ago. I said, "I just want to be great.....at everything." I am a prideful person. I try to excel at everything I do, everything I touch and everything that has my name on it. I want to be good....no, great... at everything. But how?
I used to think that as a percussionist, we are jacks of all trades and masters of none. We have to learn so many different instruments with each one requiring a substantial amount of time to master. Even the tambourine. Yes. The tambourine. Have you ever tried to play Dvorák's Carnival Overture? Yeah. Become a master of that tambourine part. But seriously, my thought process has changed....at least somewhat. As percussionist, we must become a master of all. You might even become great at some instruments. You just have to find your niche.
In today's time, it seems that not many people want to be great anymore. Somewhere along the way, it seems as if society started to accept mediocrity as the norm. Maybe it started with legislation with "No Child Left Behind" or something. But since when did EVERYONE get a trophy. "If you're not first....you're last!"--Ricky Bobby.
In life, I believe you must be the greatest you can be. Try. Put your best foot forward. If you fail, learn and do it better next time. Don't accept low achievements as if they are the only rewards you deserve. No, that's not how it works. Everyone deserves greatness. Everyone should be in the presence of greatness...the presence of your greatness. But are you willing to work for it? Inherertance happens, but what will you do with it? If you didn't inherit greatness, how will you acquire it? You have to continue on the path until it is yours. Can you do it? Will you do it?
So I ask again, who wants to be great?
